40th Anniversary of the End of Wabash Operations. This Banner issue, a ten-section double issue which closes out the 2003 publication year, commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the leasing of the Wabash by the Norfolk & Western, on October 16, 1964. The first article was taken from the 1973 issue of Norfolk & Western magazine and relates the story of the Wabash Railroad from its roots with the Northern Cross Railroad in Illinois in 1838 to the 2428-mile system it was in 1964. The next article by Jim Holmes explains the circumstances that led up to the October 1964 leasing of the Wabash Railroad and its ultimate merger into the Norfolk Southern system in the 1990s. Four articles were selected from the original Wabash Railroad publication, The Banner, for the year 1964 and reprinted word for word and in the same style and formatting of the original issues. Also included is a chart that shows at a glance the major components that eventually made up the Wabash system and their years of existence. Also featured are two tables of information as of 2004 about Wabash right-of-way still in existence and Wabash equipment and structures that have been preserved. Following is James Tilton's article detailing where some of the towns and timetable names came from in What’s in a Name Along the Wabash. Winding up this issue are tables listing Wabash Station Numbers for Transportation Purposes originally issued in 1964, sorted first by number and then alphabetically. At the centerfold is a historic timeline of Wabash railroad milestones from the Northern Cross until the company’s demise.

No. 79
(2019)
Issue No. 79 is the largest Banner to date that we've ever issued (60 pages). There are only two articles, with the primary focus being on the Wabash P-1 Hudson locomotive fleet. Converted from five mothballed K-5 Mikados into the 4-6-4 Hudson wheel configuration, the first batch were used in primarily passenger service from 1943 until 1946, when another converted Hudson was put into use. It was soon followed by the last converted locomotive in 1947. Unfortunately, none were preserved (although a number of collectible artifacts from the fleet were saved by intrepid individuals, as outlined in the magazine) and all the Hudsons were scrapped in 1956. Numerous photos, both B&W and color, are found in this issue. Some of the images included might be so rare as to never having been seen before! Following the Hudson article is an expanded "Around The System" section, with B&W Wabash photos contained therein. The second article is by Larry Van Houten, and deals with the Wabash collectibles related to tobacco (i.e. cigars, ashtrays, cigar boxes, matchbooks, lighters, etc.). This article too contains numerous photos from the railroadiana collections of several members, including Larry.

No. 6
(2018)
The first article of TWM 6 informs us about the Wabash's fleet of fifteen U25B diesel locomotives: their first of the second-generation road diesels. Next up is an extensive article by Larry Van Houten regarding his super-detailing of both the Athearn and Stewart U25B models. Prototype photos of each engine in the series follows. Then we take a look at one of the more unique Wabash cars: Scale Test Car No. 3019. Also documented in the article are track scales and scale houses on the Wabash. And following that is another modeling piece about No. 3019, in addition to the cars' dedicated bunk car No. 4619. The issue is profusely illustrated with modeling and prototype images in both B&W and color, in addition to vintage maps and print advertising related to the article subjects.

This is our first foray into an ALL-COLOR publication, and is definitely not an issue to miss!

This issue is 36 pages in length.

No. 7
(2019)

TWM No. 7 subjects are the Wabash VO-1000 switch engines, with both prototype and modeling articles written by Gary Roe. "A Closer Look" provides details regarding Gary's scratch-building of the brackets holding rerail frogs on both sides of the VO's front truck (you can see the frog in the cover photo). Next is a full-color centerfold of Gary's HO and N-scale models of the VO-1000. An extensive "Proto Photos" section, with both color and B&W photos follows. It includes builder's as well as in-service shots of all four VO-1000s in the Wabash fleet. John Bordner then forays into article authorship by using his keen eye for detail to write up Part 1 of "Monkey Motion". This 3-part series (we could only fit the first part in this issue) has to do with how the Wabash creatively recycled old, worn-out rail for other purposes. This first part deals with an industrial siding's unique retaining wall and barricade at Quincy, Illinois. Written in John's trademark witty style, this column is sure to become a fan favorite. Parts 2 and 3 will be fit into TWM No. 8 if at all possible. Rounding out the issue is a "Postscript" which hopefully identifies the location of a Wabash scale house that was featured in TWM No. 6. Included are some new photos of the scale house and its proximity to the structures of other railroads nearby...helping to solve the mystery location.

This issue also contains Data File No. 10 as an insert. Not only is a diagram of the VO-1000 featured, but the file also contains painting & lettering diagrams for ALL the Wabash switch engines, including photos of some of the switch engines and their compliance with, as well as their non-compliance with the Wabash Standard Plan for Safety Appliances.

TWM No. 7 is profusely illustrated with modeling and prototype images in both B&W and color, in addition to vintage maps and print advertising related to the article subjects.

No. 8
(2020)
TWM No. 8 features the "'Columbia Cannonball' in HO-Scale" by Larry Van Houten. This long-serving quirky mixed train makes a great addition to any layout. "Modeling the Passenger Cars of the Cannonball" provides information on kitbashing and detailing commonly available passenger car models like the Atlas paired window coach no. 20 003 601 and the Walthers ACF 70' classic heavyweight baggage car. The article also discusses painting and weathering techniques and provides a wealth of photographs and diagrams of the prototypes and Van Houten's HO examples.

"Wabash Open-Top Hoppers" by Gary Roe discusses a variety of commercially available Wabash lettered N-scale hoppers and how they compare to Wabash prototypes.

Finally, Dave Roeder brings us "Scratch Building the Ferguson, Missouri Depot." The Ferguson depot is a great example of a mid-sized Wabash freight depot, and Roeder's article provides the bounty of visual references you have come to expect from the Wabash Modeler.
