A note to individuals searching for Wabash employee records:

The WRHS does not have any former Wabash Railroad personnel records in our archives. Those records are most likely lost. Norfolk Southern Railroad (the present-day Wabash) has indicated that it does not have employment records for its 300-some predecessor lines. Norfolk Southern recommends that people check with the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, which can be contacted at 844 North Rush, Chicago, IL 60611; 312-751-4500. Be advised that records only go back to about 1935.

(Wabash workers inside a "tool car")

Another possible source is the United Transportation Union, 216-228-0411, Cleveland, Ohio. UTU records go back until about 1900. The employee would have had to have been a union member, but since UTU now combines most of the old unions, it's one source.

The Randolph County Historical Society in Moberly, Missouri is in possession of Wabash employee record cards, most likely only for the operating districts on the Moberly Division. The information contained therein ranges from sketchy to extremely detailed. Information about Wabash employees, both handwritten and typed, is recorded onto cards like this:

Please note that these are not "personnel records" in the strictest sense of the term, and the RCHS collection is far from complete.
